Choose Local PA is a local initiative created by the Port Angeles Forward Committee at the behest of the Port Angeles City Council. Its aim is to educate residents as to why their support of the local business community is a direct benefit to the community as a whole and to the individuals who live here.
There are thousands of Buy Local campaigns nationally, many of which were studied by Port Angeles Forward. This grassroots effort was renamed Choose Local in recognition that customers have choices and that needs to be respected. The aim is to make a clear and vocal case for the benefits of supporting local enterprise, whether it’s retail, manufacturing or services. The hope is that the program will develop over time and prove effective in helping to bring greater prosperity to our region.
The Choose Local Committee consists of Chair Mike Edwards, citizen at large, Chris Riffle of Platt Irwin Law Firm, Grace Kauffman of Sterling Impressions Photographic, Fran Feeley of Franni’s Fine Gifts (and representing Port Angeles Business Association), Barbara Frederick, Executive Director Port Angeles Downtown Association, April Bellerud of Odyssey Bookshop, Ed Bedford, representing Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce, Shayna Zerobrick, an administrative intern from Peninsula College, and Nathan West, City of Port Angeles Economic Development Director.
The committee met over several months and fashioned Choose Local after many other successful buy-local programs throughout the country. The first phase of this Choose Local initiative leverages the most cost effective, efficient and proven methods to raise community awareness of the importance and impact of choosing to think, shop and buy local.
“It is our intent to promote and educate the general community as to the importance and critical nature of consciously choosing to spend their dollars locally. This effort will strive to become a catalyst for focused change, community-based and attentive to local needs. The goal is long-term sustainability such that Port Angeles feels and sees the benefits from investing in itself. “
